David Rubenstein is popularly known as an American lawyer, businessman, and philanthropist. He is also known as a co-founder and co-chairman of the private equity firm The Carlyle Group. David Rubenstein Biography

Rubenstein was born on August 11, 1949, in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S. David grew up as an only child in a modest Jewish family. The United States Postal Service employed his father while his mother was a homemaker. David graduated from the college preparatory high school Baltimore City College, an all-male school at the time. He then attended Duke University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1970. David also earned his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1973 and was an editor of the University of Chicago Law Review.

David Rubenstein Career

Rubenstein practised law in New York with Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison from 1973 to 1975. After school, he served as chief counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Constitutional Amendments for a year. Rubenstein also served as a deputy domestic policy advisor to President Jimmy Carter and worked in private practice in Washington, D.C.

In 1987, David founded The Carlyle Group with William E. Conway Jr. and Daniel A. D’Aniello. The firm has since grown into a global investment firm with $293 billion of assets under management, with more than 1,800 employees in 31 offices on six continents.

In 2018, he formed Declaration Capital, a family office focused on venture, growth, real estate, and family-owned businesses. On January 30, 2024, Rubinstein and a group that includes New York investors Michael Arougheti and Cal Ripken Jr. reached a $1.725 billion deal to acquire the Orioles. If approved by the league’s owners, the group would acquire 40% of the team and the remainder after Peter Angelos’ death.

Carlyle Group Inc. co-founder David Rubenstein has reached an agreement to buy the Baltimore Orioles for $1.725bn, a source told the Associated Press.

If the deal is approved by Major League Baseball, Rubenstein, a Baltimore native, would take over as the team’s controlling owner. He has assembled an investment team that includes Ares co-founder Michael Arougheti.

Rubenstein was married to Alice Rubenstein from May 21, 1983, to December 8, 2017, when they divorced. The two lovers met while both were working for the Carter Administration. Alice on the other hand is the founder of the Alaska House New York and the Alaska Native Arts Foundation and former owner of Alaska Dispatch News.

Rubenstein and Alice have three adult children: Alexandra, Gabrielle, and Andrew. Gabrielle co-founded Manna Tree, a private equity firm that invests in health and nutrition companies. She was also a co-chair of Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign in Alaska.
